Can’t Swim are a four piece band from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis blending Indy, Post Hardcore and Punk Rock.
They are Aidan Rivett (drums), Callum Macleod (vocals/guitar), Donald Bryden (guitar) and Scott Chalmers (bass)
Can’t Swim started in summer/autumn 2008 after the split of an older band, and after recruiting Aidan (and cleaning out Scott’s garage) they put together five songs in five weeks. Some members of the town’s music scene helped them put together a few showcase gigs for Stornoway’s Battle of the Bands 2008 which they later went on to win.
Winning Battle of the Bands lead them on to record a debut EP titled Orphans with the title track being played on Vic Galloway’s Radio 1 BBC Introducing… show and then on to open the main stage at Sounds In The Grounds in 2009.
In their own words.
Good day, we are Can’t Swim, a gang of four crotchful young stallions. We play bass, 2 guitars, drums and do singing. We won a competition, or two (but actually just one) Then supported a lovely, sensitive, bald man while he sang about his feelings, and a less lovely but every bit as sensitive boy with greasy hair and catchy jingles. Then we supported three boys by the name of General Fiasco who were well good. We recorded an eepee called ‘Orphans’ which we then released with the title track being played on Vic Galloway’s Radio 1 BBC introducing show, at which point we collectively pee’d our pants.
I see a lot of potential here. Young, raw, punk in a garage. Can’t go wrong.
