Isles FM is the community radio station for the Western Isles. Based in Stornoway the station broadcasts to the community 24 hours a day from it’s home in Newton Street.
Isles FM has been on air since 1998 providing a mix of local news, information and music as well as plenty of local advertising. The output includes a huge variety of music from heavy metal to jazz and chart hits to accordion music but the focus is very much on local, Scottish and Gaelic music and providing a channel for local bands and talent.
While Isles FM is more than a community radio station, it is the information lifeblood of the islands and a focal point for community information, it also makes for hilarious listening at times, dead air, bad patter, missed cues, wrong CDs and so on.
Here’s a three part fly-on-the-wall BBC documentary filmed in 1994/1995 before the station was formally launched.
