Tonight, a gala fashion show in Glasgow’s Blythswood Square hotel will celebrate the third birthday of Harris Tweed Hebrides and the Shawbost-based company’s most successful year so far.
More than 150 guests from the media and fashion worlds will join the company’s management and investors on Thursday evening for a catwalk show featuring some of this season’s stunning new designs using tweed from Shawbost.
HTH creative director, Mark Hogarth, said: “The past few months have brought an amazing flow of really great products from labels such as Thomas Pink, Fred Perry, Canadian Goose and Topman, all of whom are supporting the show.
“It also gives us an opportunity to present our own range of niche products which result from collaborations with young Scottish designers like Judy Clark and Deryck Walker. It is going to be a great evening of Harris Tweed in a stunning setting.”
The choice of Blythswood Square, Glasgow’s first five star hotel, as the venue is no accident. Most of the hotel’s interiors including chairs, bar-stools, curtains, wall-coverings, lampshades and headboards are made from fabric produced by Harris Tweed Hebrides.
Brian Wilson, chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides, said: “Ian Angus Mackenzie and some of the team from Shawbost will be there to meet customers and provide all the information that people invariably ask for about Harris Tweed.
“We have had a fabulous year and all the signs for the future are positive. The United States market is beginning to come through very positively as a result of the work that we have put into it and there is a real appetite for Harris Tweed in fashion circles around the world. It will be exactly three years to the cold November day when Ian Angus turned the key on a derelict mill in Shawbost. At that time people were talking about the death of Harris Tweed but the situation has been absolutely transformed and we enjoy getting that message across.”
Also supporting the evening are Arnish-based Hebridean Seaweed whose products are used in the Blythswood Square spa.
Managing director Martin Macleod said: We’re delighted to be involved in this prestigious event and everyone will receive a preview of our new health food product. It’s great to be celebrating not just one great island industry but two.”
